Puppy Picking Process
When picking a puppy, it should begin with a breeder who shares the same values as the prospective puppy owner. When the right breeder and breeding pair is chosen, the prospective owner has started the puppy picking process. Even though, genetically, there may be one or two puppies more dominant than their littermates, it can be hard to determine at such a young age.
Ultimately, given the quality of the breeder and genetics, most of the dogs development will be based on home environment, training regimen, and nutrition.
However, I still take the time to help select a puppy for you. At about 3 weeks of age, I will begin daily observations and take notes of the puppies temperaments and behaviors. Between 6-7 weeks old, I will apply my notes and perform the Volhard’s Puppy Aptitude Testing to help solidify what I have already observed the weeks prior. It will help me determine which puppies, if any, are more dominant or submissive, active or quiet, confident or shy, independent and bold, etc. With the results, I am able to help select the puppy whose temperament suits your lifestyle and goals with the information provided when the puppy was reserved.
